Five straight for seven-year-old mare

Charmbo Stormy (Sportswriter) earned her fifth consecutive harness racing victory as she kicked off her seven-year-old campaign at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Thursday (Jan. 2).

The mare fired forward to lead into the first turn for Austin Sorrie and was in control through splits of :28.2, :57.2, and 1:25.4. The first-over Mystic Wild Rose (Tyler Borth) was unable to mount a sustained bid, but Fated Fire (James MacDonald) provided pressure from the pocket down the stretch. Charmbo Stormy stayed strong, rebuffing that rival to win by a length in 1:54.3. One Last Bet (Bob McClure) was five lengths back in third.

CHARMBO STORMY REPLAY

Charmbo Stormy has now won five in a row since finishing third in her first start for Jared Mann in November. Ronald Nobes of Fergus owns the mare, who is 17-for-115 lifetime with $122,409 in earnings.

It was the first card of the year at Woodbine Mohawk Park. Bob McClure took the early lead in the drivers’ standings with a triple. James MacDonald, coming off his third straight 400-win season at the track, won two races.

Racing will continue at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Friday, Jan. 3 at 6:30 p.m. EST.
