:25.3 quarter ends win streak for Elliesjet N

DOVER, Del. — A :25.3 opening quarter on a chilly Tuesday apparently was too much for Elliesjet N and Jerseylicious as Fashion Showdown was fastest in the stretch to score a 35-1 harness racing upset in the $20,000 Mares Open pace at Dover Downs on Jan. 5. Corey Callahan notches four wins.

Elliesjet N and driver Art Stafford Jr. brought an eight-race win streak as she stepped up into the top distaff race of the week facing stakes seasoned Jerseylicious (Alan Davis) and super-sharp Shine N Shimmer (Corey Callahan) in the feature race. After taking the front approaching the first quarter Elliesjet N continued to lead past the half and to the three quarters when Shine N Shimmer moved up and challenged around the final turn before taking the front turning for home. In deep stretch, Scandalicious (Tony Morgan) came alongside but nearing the wire Ross Wolfenden and Fashion Showdown closed fastest of all to get up at the finish line in 1:51.3 and pay $73.40 for a $2 win ticket. Scandalicious was a close second in front of Shine N Shimmer. Both Elliesjet N and Jerseylicious finished out of the money.

On the official program Fashion Showdown, trained by Craig McInnis for owner Chris White, had impressive past performance credentials although the Village Jolt-Catch The Show six-year-old had started from the outside in four of her last five races. She was an 11-time winner in 2015 finishing in the first three in 23 of 31 starts earning $132,305 during the year.

Since finishing second in the Matron consolation in Early November, The Wiz Kids Stable's Girlofyourdreams has won three of her last four outings with a second, beaten by a neck, her only loss. In the $15,000 4&5-Year-Old Mares pace, Montrell Teague drove the Bart Dalious-conditioned Bettor's Delight-JK Majorette four-year-old to a gritty 1:53.4 score holding off American Truth (Morgan) by a long nose.

Wolfenden drove his second winner in a $14,000 Mares Winners-Over cutting out the mile in 1:51.3 for trainer Dave Smith and owners Randall Bendis and Tom Pollack for her 38th career win. A daughter of Camluck-Cyber wave, she has now won 655,914 lifetime. No respect (Vic Kirby) came on to finish second with Hearts N Flowers (A.Davis) third.

The next-to-longest payoff on the card came when Montrell Teague picked up his second win guiding Annabeth, off at 30-1, to a 1:53.3 surprise victory in a $12,000 Mares pace for owner-trainer Jeff Clark. An inside post was a help as the Shadow Play-Get Out Amanda four-year-old won for the first time since late October. The Empiressister N (Brett Miller) was next with Trine Hanover (A.Davis) third.

Corey Callahan won both ends of the daily double to key a four-win night. Montrell Teague and Ross Wolfenden, trainer Joe Hundertpfund and owner Bill Sartin had two wins apiece.
